5 mental shifts to make your job search more mathematical and less personal

  1. Every job search is a campaign, and every campaign has a funnel. You need a lot at the top (applications, networking, outreach) to get results at the bottom (offers).
  2. Everything is data. No single piece of advice, feedback, or rejection is “the truth”. Collect enough data to recognize patterns.
  3. Volume creates luck. It also produces data. Spending 10 hours perfecting one application might feel productive, but you’re relying on this one to be THE ONE. Perfection also doesn’t produce enough data. Finally, don’t talk to me about quality vs. quantity – you need both.
  4. Analyze your funnel to find the bottleneck. This is where quality comes in. Don’t just keep doing what hasn’t been working – only harder. Analyze what’s holding your campaign back. Do-Measure-Learn.
  5. Fix the bottleneck, then find the next one. Once you can reliably get interviews, guess what? You’ll start getting rejected at them 🤣 But remember – it’s not rejection, it’s data.

Question for you: Which of these mental shifts would be the most challenging for you to embrace? Why?
